Firm History

Gray & Becker, P.C. was established in 1983 and quickly became one of the fastest growing firms in Austin because of its commitment to providing legal services of unsurpassed quality at reasonable prices. Founders Richard E. Gray, III and Douglas M. Becker worked for several years at the Texas Attorney General’s Office. Mr. Gray, a Dallas native, served as the Executive Assistant in charge of all litigation under then-Attorney General Mark W. White while on leave of absence from Butler Binion where he was a partner. Mr. Becker, born in Houston, was Chief of the Enforcement Division under then-Attorney General Jim Mattox after being hired by John Hill in 1976; Mr. Becker also served as an assistant attorney general under Mark W. White.

In response to client demand, Gray & Becker has expanded over the years. In later years, other outstanding litigators with proven records of courtroom success or other career achievements joined the firm.

Initially, Gray & Becker’s core practice was governmental defense. In 1984 the firm was the State’s top-rated law firm outside the Attorney General’s office in defending state agencies in complex litigation raising a wide range of issues in both state and federal court. As but one of many examples, the firm was responsible for managing the Ruiz case, the massive Texas prison litigation case that was litigated for a decade.

Quickly Gray & Becker expanded into other areas of practice, especially commercial litigation, real estate litigation, employment law, insurance defense, and family law, among others. The firm has remained steadfast in its commitment to provide superior legal representation by hard-charging attorneys. By litigating economically and keeping a careful eye on litigation and operating expenses, the firm has been able to provide representation that it proudly describes as second to none at a cost significantly below that of larger, national firms.

As a result, the firm enjoys a stellar reputation within the Austin legal community, as evidenced by the fact that a significant portion of its clients are referrals from other law firms and attorneys. The firm’s lawyers love practicing law. Their passion shows in their work.
